“The Good Doctors” is the newest entry in the beloved sci-fi franchise, with a cast of quirky and fun characters who are drawn from the best of both the classic series and the new series “Doctor Who: The Next Generation.”
The show’s new incarnation, which premiered Friday, features a cast that includes an actor as the original series’ Seventh Doctor, who will be joined by a new companion, who was only hinted at in the season premiere.
The new series is set to return to the BBC in 2019.
The new “Doctor,” played by Daniel Pearl, is the third companion to join the cast, joining the former companions Rory Williams and Rose Tyler, who also joined the show in its first season.
The new Doctor, played by Michael Gambon, will be accompanied by a brand new companion named Sophie Turner, who plays the new companion of the original, Sarah Jane Smith.
Pearl was also a regular on the series, but the new “doctor” will be the first one to join a series since 2005.
Pearl will be joining “Doctor” regular Peter Capaldi, who took over the role of the Doctor from Steven Moffat, in a role that has been the subject of controversy for a while.
The show was cancelled in May 2016 after only four episodes, after a lengthy, tumultuous run that included the death of beloved writer and director Steven Moffats’ beloved character, Rory Williams.
Capaldi will play the new Doctor for the first time in the series.
“I can’t wait to do this,” Pearl said at a press event announcing the new cast on Friday.
“It’s just a great opportunity to bring the Doctor back into the public eye and I’m thrilled to be part of it.”
“Doctor Who” season 7, which premieres Sunday on BBC America, is set up as a “post-apocalyptic” story set in the year 2030, with the Doctor, Clara Oswald, Rory, Rose and Rose’s new companion Clara trying to survive in the post-apocalypse.
With the new episodes set to debut Friday, Pearl said the show’s creators and executive producers were excited to have the new show on the air.
He also noted that Pearl was not allowed to be in the pilot episode, but that he felt it would be too awkward for him to play the role.
But Pearl will have to work with the new companions as well as new “The Doctor,” since the series is being directed by James May, who is returning to direct “Doctor.”
“I’m so excited to be joining the show again, but I have to admit, I was nervous to be the new ‘Doctor,'” Pearl said.
“But I’m really excited to get to work and I can’t be more excited to do the job!”
