The question that keeps popping up: Is it true that natural diamonds can actually be harmful?
I’ll answer that question with a quick review of the literature.
First, the short version: yes.
There’s research showing that natural gems are actually much more toxic than synthetic ones, which are made from diamond dust and other materials that are more prone to causing skin irritation.
Second, the long version: no.
Natural diamonds are not considered a “safe” or “good” material, and while there’s some evidence that they may be less prone to corrosion than synthetic diamonds, there’s also some research that suggests they may actually be more damaging.
Third, and perhaps most importantly, it’s important to remember that there’s still a long way to go before synthetic diamonds become an acceptable replacement for natural diamonds.
In the meantime, synthetic diamonds are still the safest, most environmentally-friendly way to buy a piece of jewelry.
